Distinguished President Elect Obama:

Allow me to introduce myself--I am Fernando Suárez del Solar, an American citizen since 1995 of Mexican origin and the father of L/Cpl. Jesús Alberto Suárez del Solar, USMC, who died in Iraq on March 27, 2003.

Prior to my son's death, I worked hard like every immigrant and I tolerated low wages and discrimination; at least my family was whole and at peace. One day, when we still lived in Tijuana, Mexico, and my son was only 13 years old, a Marine recruiter told him that if my son enlisted someday he could become an agent in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).  My son had grown up in Tijuana and he seen how drugs destroy the lives of innocent children and he wanted to become a policeman.

The recruiter who exploited my son's idealism promised that he would spend one year in the Marines and then transfer to the DEA despite the fact that he was not a U.S. citizen.  We learned too late that none of this was true, but we accepted that in fact he would have to spend 8 years in the Marines.  Then September 11 changed the history of the world.  We were proud that our beloved son would be part of the armed forces that would protect us from terrorism.

Unfortunately, President Bush began to tell a series of lies about WMD and the connection between 9/11 and Iraq.  My son was deployed to the Kuwaiti border in February of 2003 and although I opposed the war because I believe violence is never the proper response to international conflict I thought the government of my adopted country would follow the lead of the Congress and the United Nations.

But unfortunately Mr Bush led us into war with false reasons, a war against an innocent people that even today no one understands.  The carnage began on March 20, 2003, and 7 days later on March 27 my son died and my life changed forever.  The Marine official handed me an official Pentagon document that said he had been shot in the head by enemy fire, but the reality as I later learned from an embedded TV reporter who was present was that my son had stepped on a U.S. cluster bomb.  As of today, I have never received a response to my inquiries to the government about the facts of my son's death.

Since 2003 I have dedicated my life to telling my story, denouncing the lies of the Bush administration, and advocating for peace.  I traveled to Iraq in December of 2003 to see with my own eyes where my son had died at the hands of our own incompetent government, and while there I learned that thousands of Iraqi children die every day from a lack of medicine.  One year later, I returned with $650,000.00 in donated medical aid for the Iraqi people.  I have also devoted myself to speaking out against military recruiters who lie to our young people in order to meet their quotas.

And so, because I know that you opposed the war in Iraq, I have taken the audacious step of writing to you directly.

Today, our schools are in great financial trouble.  In minority and working-class communities, school districts lack the necessary resources, many schools have closed, many teachers have lost their jobs.  But the military recruiters have become better funded and so they visit the schools whenever they like hunting for young people who only want to get an education.  And so I must ask:  "What is our priority--education or the militarization of our youth?

Mr. President Elect, I ask, no I implore, you to put an end to military recruitment in our public schools.  Let us put the billions of dollars used to fund recruitment and JROTC back into the educational mission of our schools.  Let the American Dream be realized not with false promises and weapons training but rather with books, decent classrooms, well paid teachers, and a pedagogy of hope.

Si se puede Sr. Obama!  Yes we can.

My walk through Life

I have walked a lot in this life. I am almost 50 years old

I have seen joy;

I have seen sadness.

I have lived death

I have lived life

I have seen the birth of divine creatures

And I have felt the lost one, my sons.

And now, at almost 50 years old, I cry for life and death

Because it is possible to be dead alive or alive when dead.

Just like my son,

Alive in his death

Alive, yes, because he did not die, he just tracended from this material plane

To a spiritual plane

I have felt death in my arms,

I have felt life in my heart

But today, I have seen the pain of mothers

Crying for the loss of their children

Wars bring suffering to all, all cry and nobodies gains

We all lose, we all die

That is why today, after 2000 soldier deaths, and more that 100,000 civil deaths

I have cried, yes, I have cried like I had not cried in a long time

I cried for the pain, for death and for life

I have cried for my grandchildren, for the orphans left behind.

For the mothers morning the deaths of their children

I can not prevent it; I have not ever allowed my self to cry like I am crying today

I never allowed my self scream out my pain

I never allowed my self to explode and release my frustration

But today I did, and I have cried, I have screamed, I have exploded

While 3999 parents cry with me for our looses.

While thousands of innocents scream out their pain,

While thousands of men explode in frustration, over there in Iraq

I am no poet, not even a skilled writer

I am only a father that suffers a great pain

With this intense pain in face of the suffering of all

That like I have seen the destruction

I apologize, apologize for not doing more

For not fighting more to avoid more tears of frustration

I apologize for my effort not being more intense,

I apologize for letting my tears haze my reason, I apologize.

Mi camino por la vida

He caminado mucho en esta vida. Ya casi cumplo los 50; s

Y he visto alegrías,

Y tristezas.

He vivido la muerte

He vivido la vida

He llorado, si, he llorado como hacia mucho no lo hacia

Pero hoy lo hice, y he llorado, he gritado, he explotado

Memorial Day –

what is this special day?

According to tradition, it is a day to remember those who have fallen
in
U.S. wars. The stated goals of those wars were peace, freedom,
democracy, and justice. But what has really happened? In spite of
all of the wars that have taken thousands of our soldiers and millions
of innocents, especially children, the world is still at war and
people everywhere suffer under unjust political systems where there is
no freedom.

Why was all of this blood been spilled? To show us that war is not
the way to the noble ideals for which many have died. Today in
Iraq,
more than 2300 young men and women from the
US have died as have
thousands of innocent Iraqis. How many more must die?

On this day, I invite you to reflect on how to honor those lost souls
by working through non-violence for real peace and justice.

How ironic that thousands of Latino and Latina soldiers and marines
have died in the name of the stars and stripes and today the
government represented by that flag offends Latinos in the United
States by militarizing the border and passing discriminatory laws.
Are we to ignore the contributions made by immigrants to this great
nation?

On any of the many war monuments to past wars we can find hundreds if
not thousands of Latino names. Each served with pride and each was
praised by politicians at the time. But what is happening now? Not
only are they dishonored but abusive and immoral proposals for
immigration reform insult their relatives and families.

On this day, to recall the thousands of lost lives is to remind
ourselves that wars only produce more hate, more destruction, more
injustice, more grieving families, and more rage. This cycle must be
stopped by acts of peace. No more names of the dead on monuments, no
more holidays to honor the fallen, no more wars that incite the hatred
of other peoples and religions. We ought to abolish Memorial Day.

Until then, let us use this day of remembrance and sadness to begin a
new culture that respects human rights and all life. Let us tell Bush
and those who will come after him that wars are not a path to peace.
In honor of our fallen soldiers, let us raise our voice as one to say
"Enough!"

Memorial Day - a day of mourning, tears, and reflection.

The World Today –

Fernando Suarez Del Solar

July 26 2006

The world today is faced with a possible imminent third world war as we stand at the gates of Hell itself with so many deaths in the misnamed cause of “Peace”

The occupants of the White House have prepared in great detail the shock waves of terror which have brought these atrocious military attacks on the innocent peoples of Iraq, Lebanon, and Afghanistan and they are preparing to unleash even more violence on the peoples of Iran, Syria, etc. The question then becomes: Where is the world going with this type of activity? What future can our youth look forward to as one by one the doors to universities are closing to them, leaving them only the doors to military bases? Where are we going with this hateful militarism?

Today the world is experiencing yet another war: Israel against Lebanon. But can we say it is really a “war” when the civilian population of Lebanon is being killed like flies by bombs and missiles manufactured in the United States – bombs and missiles that explode on their homes while they have no real idea why?

Is it right to kill innocent children to rescue two soldiers kidnapped by a gang of wrongdoers called terrorists?

Is it right to destroy an entire people for that?

Today banner headlines tell of the horrific situation of a people, but –

What happened to the ”other war”, the one where more than 2500 north American youths have died, as well as thousands of ordinary Iraqi civilians, the immense majority of whom are children? It seems that human beings have gotten used to seeing the dead of war and to not reacting until it is to their family’s doorstep that the black bag arrives, carrying the mutilated body of their own son or daughter. That’s when they raise their voices and ask for Peace. Why wait until then? Why not start NOW to raise our voices, to act and demand a Ceasefire, the withdrawal of the invading troops and respect for the sovereignty of nations?

That is why I have decided to issue a general call to the population to unite in a single voice, to rise up as one body, and to resist these attacks which are not only aggressions against one people, but against humanity as a whole.

It is ludicrous and at the same time worrisome that in the United States, our youth are facing shrinking opportunities for a quality higher education under the pretext of a “War on Terrorism”, and that they have to enroll in a military system which will destroy them sooner or later and end their lives. It is criminal that the Bush government designates millions of dollars for a deceitful system of military recruitment in the schools, while monies for education are reduced day after day.

The truth is I am sickened, disturbed at the whole world’s passivity in this terrible situation. I am tired and frustrated to see the deaths mounting day by day, children dieing, parents losing their children, and it seems that there is no hope for a future of peace and justice among the nations. My son died, and it is true that nothing that I do or write will bring him back. No. But I am convinced that my words, my actions can bring awareness to others so that we can begin to build another type of army – an army of non-violence, an army of peace that fights with words and education for a better world.

Today the world finds itself before the prospect of an imminent third world war

Tercera guerra mundial?

Fernando Suarez del Solar

Julio 26 2006

=======================================================

2007/2008 Happy New Year?

Another fateful year comes to an end, 2007, full of death, destruction, discrimination, abuse, all managed from the White House by a criminal president whose only accomplishment has been to spill the blood of innocents and to foment world-wide hatred against the USA.

A year ends that saw more than 3900 American families mourn the loss of one of its children lost in the criminal and illegal war in Iraq, where more than 38.000 young soldiers have been physically wounded and hundreds of thousands more hurt in mind and spirit, while the hawks in the White House enjoy the comfort afforded by their impunity to the crimes they commit daily against humanity.

A year ends that saw military recruiters continue to aggressively deceive young people so that they will enlist in the Armed Forces and perhaps serve in illegal and criminal wars.  Militarized programs within the public schools implement the use of firearms on campus by building shooting ranges for JROTC.

A year ends that saw more and veterans of the war in Iraq living in the street, their minds disturbed by their memories of war.

During these days of celebration one sees joy expressed by people who ignore the pain of war, the pain of the immigrant abused and separated from his or her family.  The streets are decorated with colorful lights and businesses attract consumers with shiny messages, but among all the consumption no one hears the cry of the mothers and children of Iraq who have lost everything.  They see no colorful lights and no Santa Claus will visit them.  Another year makes five Christmases without my son Jesus Alberto, five years in which I have not stopped mourning his absence, in which my grandson suffers the loss of his father and all thanks to the corrupt interests of Mr. Bush and his accomplices in power.

Another year begins with Mr. Bush in the White House. Fortunately it is the last but what can we expect?  More blood? More hatred? An even worse economy?  Everything seems to indicate that this is what awaits us. Bush's speeches and those of his lackeys like Ms. Rice indicate that they are still thirsty for innocent blood. Their speeches suggest a coming war with Iran and threats against other free and sovereign countries that refuse to be trampled by their imperialist boots. All this makes many nervous and we fear the worst.

For that reason my friends, today,as a New Year begins, 2008, in which a new president of the USA will be elected, I invite you to redouble our efforts to put in the White House a person who truly understands humanism, social justice, and harmony among human beings.  I know it will be difficult because the political landscape does not offer much hope that we will find that ideal person. But even so, we must continue in the struggle to save the country and humanity from a criminal disguised as a president.

I do not wish you all a Happy 2008, no, I wish you the strength to confront the coming year that may be the worst year yet for a world still trapped in the talons of that most savage of all hawks--Bush.

I invite you all to visit the Guerrero Azteca Peace Project (GAPP) website, (http://www.guerreroazteca.org). There is still much work to be done to bring the war to an end, to educate our youth about military realities, and to make them aware of non-military alternatives.

Your donations and requests for speaking engagements would be of great support to GAPP.

(Translated by Jorge Mariscal)
